Look closely at the dress
With a vintage gown, ask what is known about its age and history. For a handmade piece, ask how it was made. If either matters to your choice, ask about the individual gown before deciding.
Look at the hem and underarms, then the seams and fastenings. Ask about any marks or signs of wear you notice. Check the lining as well as the outside: you will feel it against your skin throughout the day.
If lace is what drew you to the dress, look at where the pattern sits across the bodice and sleeves. Does it cover as much skin as you want? Look at the neckline from the side, too. For a gown with a plain skirt, turn around and check how the fabric falls at the back.
Compare details, not whole photographs
Browse our Moon brides and pick out a detail you want to try, such as a high neckline or a full skirt. Save the image with a note naming that detail. A photograph of a dress you love is more useful at a fitting when you can say which part you like.
Compare gowns on that same point. If you like the sleeves on one and the skirt on another, say so. You can like part of a dress without choosing the whole gown.
